Keeping Echo Safe, Friendly and Pet-Friendly

Echo is a community that loves its pets. Dogs are an important part of many families here, and most pet owners do a great job caring for and controlling their animals. Recently, however, the City became aware of an incident where a resident was bitten by a dog that had gotten outside of its fence. Thankfully, situations like this are rare, but it serves as an important reminder for all of us to be mindful and responsible pet owners.

“The City of Echo’s dog ordinances are not meant to be punitive or heavy-handed. Their purpose is to help keep residents, visitors, pets, and neighborhoods safe while ensuring everyone can enjoy the community comfortably,” says City Administrator Mike Gonzalez.

Under City code, dogs are not allowed to run at large and should remain under the control of their owner when off private property. Dogs that chase vehicles or people, damage property, scatter garbage, bark excessively, or bite or attempt to bite people may be considered nuisance dogs under the ordinance.

What Should You Do if There Is a Dog Problem?

The City encourages neighbors to work together first whenever possible. Often, a respectful conversation with the dog owner can solve the issue quickly and peacefully. Sometimes owners may not even realize there is a problem.

If the issue continues, residents are encouraged to:

• Gather information about the dog, including a description, times of activity, and possible owner information
• Contact City Hall at 541-376-6038
• Report all dog bites immediately so rabies vaccination records can be verified

The City may issue a warning letter and work with residents to resolve the issue before citations become necessary.

Dog Licensing and Rabies Vaccinations

The City recently mailed out its annual dog survey and reminder forms. The survey helps keep City records current and ensures dogs are properly licensed and vaccinated. Residents are asked to return the form along with current rabies vaccination information by July 1, 2026.

Keeping vaccinations current is important for the safety of pets and people alike.

A Shared Responsibility

Echo prides itself on being a respectful and neighborly community. Responsible pet ownership helps protect children, seniors, pedestrians, bicyclists, and other pets while also protecting dog owners themselves from potential liability or fines.

The City appreciates the cooperation of residents and understands that most dog-related situations can be resolved through communication, courtesy, and responsible ownership.

If you have questions about licensing, vaccinations, or City dog regulations, please contact Echo City Hall at 541-376-6038.
